The alternate destinations to make you ‘unique’ from the crowd

We’ve all been there lately- since the world has opened up again, everyone is out exploring and trying to catch up for lost time. Which is amazing! But this is the third time you’ve heard about someone’s Japan trip and how the bullet train is so much faster than you could ever think. Or how relaxing Canggu is because it’s nothing like the hustle and bustle of Legian in Bali. And while you are chipping away in your brain and storming up ideas for your next destination, you may be thinking about how you don’t want to be the sixth person to describe the same experience to your friends and family.

Cue the drums and my grand entrance into your life. You’re welcome.

This blog will provide some alternative destinations to some of those currently popular locations.

🌴 Instead of Bali… Try Sri Lanka

Bali is beautiful — there’s no denying it. But Sri Lanka? It’s like Bali’s cooler cousin that hasn’t been discovered by every influencer yet. Think surf beaches without the crowds, lush tea plantations, ancient temples, wild elephants, and a genuine warmth from the locals that feels more personal than commercial.

You can go from surfing in Arugam Bay to hiking in Ella, sipping Ceylon tea in Nuwara Eliya to spotting leopards in Yala National Park. And the best part? It still feels raw in places — authentic, untouched, and brimming with stories that haven’t been over-shared on social media.

🍜 Instead of Japan… Go for South Korea

While the cherry blossoms in Japan are out of this world, contrasted with the authentic beauty of Mount Fuji’s ice-capped background, South Korea is a powerhouse that often flies under the radar. If you want that fusion of rich tradition and futuristic tech, street food that slaps, and shopping that rivals (or arguably beats) Tokyo — Seoul has your back.

Want cherry blossoms? Yep, they’ve got those. Mountains? Check. Vibrant nightlife, karaoke bars, and jjimjilbang spas where you can soak and steam away your worries? Triple check. And if you’re a foodie, Korean BBQ, hotteok, tteokbokki, and a side of soju under city lights might just make you forget Japan’s konbini life altogether.

🎭 Instead of London… Explore Edinburgh, Scotland

Yes, London is iconic with its red buses and the Big man himself, Ben. But if you want history, architecture, charm, and some actual breathing room, Edinburgh might be your soul city. Think medieval alleyways, gothic castles, cozy pubs, and ghost stories on every cobblestone corner.

The city oozes character without the chaos. You can climb Arthur’s Seat for panoramic views, catch the Fringe Festival if you’re around in August, or hop on a train to explore the stunning Scottish Highlands. It’s all the UK charm, but with a rugged, mystical edge. Bonus: the people are incredibly friendly, and you might actually enjoy your taxi conversations.

🌊 Instead of the Amalfi Coast… Go for Puglia, Italy

I’m hearing you already; “But those gorgeous coloured houses on the cliffs!” I know. But it’s also become the backdrop of everyone’s European summer. If you’re craving Italian coastline vibes without the inflated prices or shoulder-to-shoulder tourist crowds, head to Puglia in Italy’s southeastern “heel.”

Puglia delivers everything you love about Italy: charming seaside towns (hello, Polignano a Mare), whitewashed villages like Ostuni, and some of the country’s best food — think orecchiette, fresh burrata, and olive oil straight from ancient groves. The coastline? Just as stunning as Amalfi, but with more locals than influencers.

Plus, you’ll find baroque architecture, quiet beaches, trulli houses in Alberobello, and a slower, more soulful pace of life. It’s Italian beauty with a rustic edge — and plenty of room to breathe.

Final Boarding Call ✈️

Travel is personal. It’s about the stories you collect, the people you meet, and the “you had to be there” moments you treasure. But let’s be honest — it’s also a little bit about being that friend who found the next ‘it’ destination before everyone else.

So while your mates are still raving about Bali’s smoothie bowls or lining up for ramen in Tokyo, you’ll be somewhere off the beaten path, sipping arrack in Sri Lanka, dancing in Seoul, wandering through Edinburgh’s haunted streets, or diving into the Mediterranean off Italy’s other coast.

The world is wide — go explore the corners people haven’t flooded yet.
